They were popular during the 50s and the 70s and are once again the must-have jewelry item. We are, of course, referring to charm bracelets, which are just as much desired by grown women as they are by little girls. They are the perfect way for wearers to broadcast their hobbies, sports, interests, job, and various other traits without saying a word.
The bracelet itself is comprised of links to which the charms are attached. The links may be round, square, or even unique shapes like hearts, knots, or varied size link clusters. In many cases, the bracelet itself is a work of art, featuring crystal accents and various patterns. It can be worn without any charms at all and will still draw compliments from observers. In this case, starting the collection of charms can be a slow process and the wearer will still have a pretty piece of jewelry.
Different kinds of metals are used to make this bracelet, including gold plate, sterling silver, 10-karat yellow gold, 14-karat yellow gold, and 14-karat white gold. The 14-karat white or yellow gold varieties are usually the most expensive. Some young girls and women prefer sterling silver to gold and this lowers the cost quite a bit. The sterling silver variety features a price point that makes it a nice gift for a friend or family member.
The bracelet includes a clasp, often of the toggle or lobster style. The lobster clasp is the classic type and requires that the wearer pull a lever to open a loop for securing the ring from the other end of the jewelry. Toggle clasps are the more contemporary style and use a bar and ring. The bar is put in the ring to secure the jewelry on the wrist. Those who prefer jewelry that is easier to close should look for magnet and screw-on clasps. These often feature an additional closure for securing purposes should the clasp come undone.
There are various bracelet sizes and widths, allowing the wearer to further customize the look. The skinniest versions are around 3.5mm wide and the widest are usually about 8mm in width. The length usually ranges between seven and eight inches, though smaller sizes can be found for children.
Whether yellow gold, white gold, gold plated, or sterling silver charm bracelets are selected, they are sure to make a statement. The different link styles, widths, and lengths allow the young woman or lady to find the perfect look. All of these choices and we haven’t even gotten to the charms yet!
