So You Want To Build A Website?

December 28th, 2009

Introduction

When I decided I needed a website for my business I had no idea of the planning involved. Like most people, I thought web design meant deciding on the graphics and the look of the pages and then by some magic it would all happen.

I have a friend who is in the business of SEO web design and website development so I approached him for a quote. As a complete novice who is computer literate up to a point, I was amazed at the depth of initial questioning required to find out exactly what my requirements were.I realise now it is akin to building a house or other huge project where it is all in the preparation.

I had no idea about the various elements and the structure of the site and I found it mind blowing when I learnt about the amount of work involved. So I thought other people would be interested to know more about this complicated process particularly if you consider yourself a non computer person and have to get a website built. I have asked my SEO friend to supply the technical information for this article.

Stages in the Process

Target Audience

Before building a website there are important questions to consider. I was asked who would be my target audience. Who are my customers likely to be? Would they be children, businesses, home owners, sales people, parents or teenagers and so on?

The Objective of the Website

Then I was asked, what was the purpose of my website? Did I want to sell services on line or use it to market my business and get more leads for potential customers? Maybe I would want to use the site as an online brochure to showcase my services. Another possibility was to use the website to foster a community so that I was in contact with other like-minded people, with chat rooms, online discussions and being supported by advertising on the site. This didn’t really apply to my business, although I did think about offering to advertise allied services!

I hadn’t quite realised the scope of a website but as I was asked these questions it became clear that a lot of careful thought went into the preparation before building a website.

Creating a Site Map

The importance of creating a site map is to get it clear in your mind of all the pages you will have on your website so you can prepare the content for each page and begin to design the flow through the website, such as when a user adds a product to their basket, then enters their delivery and billing address and makes the credit card payment in the correct order.

You wouldn’t build a house without having the technical drawings done and in web development the sitemap is as important. Without it the project will not be optimal, such things as your copy writing and SEO will all end up being half cocked, unless you plan them methodically first.

The aim is to make the site as simple to use as possible so that there are no barriers to getting into the website or making a purchase. For that reason often user name and passwords are set for the customer so that they are not put off making a purchase by having to register. How many times have you gone to buy something online and then been faced with having to choose a user name and password to create an account, and fill out all of your address details and decided not to bother in the end? Well they just lost a sale!

For a non e-commerce site things are simpler with a contact form which allows you to receive enquiries by email without publishing your email address on the website, thus avoiding junk email.Web forms can also validate the information before you receive it, so ensuring that the phone number provided does not contain words, and that the email address is in the correct format, for example. These things may sound very technical to us lay-folk but I assure you everything has to be decided in advance before starting on the construction of the site.

Your Domain Name

Choosing a domain name is often quite a challenge because every name you initially come up with will almost certainly have been taken. Domain names ending in .com are by far the most popular and internationally recognised; the snag is that it’s very popularity means that the majority of the shorter names have probably already been registered. Purchasing an existing .com domain name from its registered user can be fraught with problems and the best way to do this is through an escrow process monitored by a third party. However, you can usually think of some domain name that is available, which is much less time consuming than trying to purchase a previously registered domain name from its existing owner, most of the time just contacting them, and getting a reply is a challenge.

So looking at names with endings such as .net; .org .co.uk or .info may be able to provide you with the domain name you would like to have. When choosing your domain name it is very important to include one or more of your keywords if possible as this can apparently help with search engine rankings. So although the name of your business is the obvious choice for a domain name, it is not necessarily the only option. You will no doubt have heard the Hoover/vacuum cleaner story, where Hoover is actually a brand name of a certain type of vacuum cleaner, but these days most people still say they are doing the ‘hoovering’ ! This is an important concept to bear in mind when choosing your domain name as hoovers4u.com might be a much better domain name than discountvaccuumcleaners.com, also vacuum is a tricky word to spell so think about things like that too. Also how easy is it to give out your domain name over the telephone for example? Classic examples of this are paydotcom.com and Slashdot.org confusing or what?

Copy

The next stage is preparing the content. This is not the design of your website – just the words and visuals you want to have one each of the pages. A good idea before writing the copy is to have created your site map and decided on your SEO keywords, see below sections.

Having gathered all the above information you will need to decide what imagery you want to use within the website content. As we all know, a picture speaks a thousand words and remains in people’s memory far longer than just words. It is a popular concept that people don’t read, and is even more true on the web today, so use as many images, diagrams, cartoons and illustrations as possible.

For each image you should also have a caption, as the caption of an image is the next ‘most read’ words on the page after the page title. Images and their captions need to be clickable. When you click on a picture it should take you to the next stage of the process such as the sale page or placing an enquiry if your website is for lead generation. All images should also have alternative text or alt tags. Alt tags will display the hover text when you position your mouse over the picture, but also they are used by screen readers to assist visually impaired users know what the image is about. See the section below on Accessibility and Compliance.

Website Design

Finally we come to the design of your website.

Creative web design can be one of the most difficult stages in the site build because unlike something technical, it is not a simple case of black and white, it is determined by how the person, or people, viewing the designs feel about it.

There are a number of ways to approach website design but ultimately you need to create a design brief for the designer(s) to work from. Look at other websites and your competitor’s websites to find out what you like or dislike. The design brief should give reference to the logo, any existing brand guidelines or schemes and fonts and colour schemes, and should also detail which pages of the website that the designer is being tasked with creating visuals for.

The very best results will be achieved by using a graphic designer, and beware – not all graphic designers are the same. A graphic designer who designs specifically for print is working in a different discipline than a graphic designer who designs for screen and specifically the web. So choose your designer carefully, look at other work that person has done and determine whether or not you like their style. It is also worth remembering that design is a personal thing, just because you have used a company before and liked their work, do you know the same person will be doing the work if you use that company again?

If you are working in the big time and budget allows, use multiple graphic designers who have all been given the same design brief and request three concept designs from each designer. If the client themselves also do a graphic design, even if it’s a back of the envelope scribble, you will then have 10 concept designs. The next step is to get them all together and select the preferred elements from each design. Then give the work to the preferred graphic designer to work up as the final artwork. Once you have reviewed the final visuals the artwork files will then be provided to the developer, usually in layered Photoshop files.

The artwork should be finalised and agreed on by everybody before development of the site begins. Otherwise it can lead to costly and time consuming changes and frustration for both the developer and the client.

Navigation

Another important consideration when building a website is how you want your navigation to work. You can have links within the content of your website, in the text, so there are not just links from the menu. You will need to decide whether the links will open into a new window, retaining your original page open or just change the page to the one clicked on. Next time you go online, you will realise how much thought has gone into the way in which a website works. You will may also have some ideas for improving how some of them work after reading all of this!

Production

Finally the preparation has been done and the site is ready to be built. Now for the more technical stuff! You will need to have decided which programming language to use to build the website. There are two main types for developing a website, one is Unix based, and the other is Windows based. Each one has advantages and disadvantages. If you are starting from scratch then it probably won’t matter, so you can go with the preference of your professional doing the work. My website is built on the Unix platform (apparently!) which is the same as many of the more well known websites such as Ebay, Facebook, Google and Amazon. Also your website hosting must be compatible with the development language with which your website is built.

Work In Progress

The best way to build a website and be able to monitor work in progress is on the web server where the site is ultimately going to live. This way, those involved in reviewing the work can see work in progress and provide feedback throughout the development process.

Launching Your New Website

The moment of excitement comes when your site finally is published to the internet and you see the results of all the thought that has gone into the whole process.

I spent many hours working with the web agency to get the reinstall Windows drivers site just right for our company before taking it live, and when the day came to publish it I was really pleased at all our hard work.

As soon as the site has gone live there is no substitute for real world testing though, so ask as many of your friends and colleagues to view the website from their own offices and give feedback..

Accessibility and Compliance

The website has to meet the current standards for website coding and doing so insures that disabled users, such as the visually impaired, can still access the entire website if they are using a Braille web browser. It is also a good idea to also discuss conformance moving forward, particularly if you have a web content management system, because and accessible of compliant site may become un-accessible after six months of being edited by you if you do not add or edit the website content in an accessible manner.

Unforeseen Items

There are always things that arise in any project which you suddenly realise you have forgotten, so no matter how well the web developer prepares and asks the right questions, there is bound to be a last minute change of mind or addition to the site. The main aim is to minimise the number of glitches that might arise because they aren’t calculated in at the start and they could cause extra costs and delays on the date of the site going live.As a general rule it is always a good idea to get he site live to the original plans and then look at an update after it has gone live, unless it is a very small deviation from the initial plans.

Reporting and Monitoring

Once your website is up and running, you will want to know how many people visit your website and from that number how many actually buy the products or place an enquiry. From these statistics you can work out the ratio of visits to sales and gradually make changes to improve the ratios. There are some reliable statistics packages such as Google Analytics or Web-Stat.com which allow you to collect and review website visitor data in near real time. All you need to do this is to have a small block of code inserted into each web page on your site.Using web stats programs is also invaluable for SEO keyword reviews after your site has been live for a while because it tells you what phrases have been typed into the search engines by users before they visited your website.

Another useful service that Web-stat.com provides is to monitor the website and warn you by email or text message if the site is offline.

Marketing

Once the website is live there are lots of things you can do to market your product or service. The first step is to submit it to the search engines and at the same time write articles, and press releases. Getting links to the site from forums, blogs and other social networking spaces are other options. For more on this subject ask your developer about SEO, remember that’s search engine optimisation.

How to be Found on the Web

One of the first questions I was asked was, ‘Do you want it to be found by Google the main search engine?’ If I did then there was a whole process of establishing Keywords. So finding the best keywords are vital if you want to be found in Google. He says there are two main types of keywords. The first is the trophy, or generic, keyword for the industry which in my industry is simply ‘demolition’. The second kind of keyword is the long tail keyword. These are not searched for as frequently but if you can get a match then they are much more likely to convert into customers. A good example of this in my industry is ‘factory demolition company Derby’. So it is very important to do a lot of research on keywords to find both those that are the most popular and the most specific. Generally most users only look at the first page of results so you will want to get your website promoted so as to get on this page for your chosen keywords. By using a keyword research tool such as the keyword lookup in the Google Web Master Tools kit you can find the single most popular keyword for your industry.

Conclusion

Wheww. What an amazing amount of work! I hadn’t realised when I started the process of getting a website up and running, how complicated it all is and how many factors you have to consider before even designing the website. The word web design is really a misnomer, as people often think it’s just about the graphic design on the home page, and the branding of the product. Unless you are a computer whizz, most people have no idea how much goes into designing and building a website and the systems that support the work you want it to do. I hope that this article gives you an understanding and insight into the whole process of website development from start to finish.

How to Get No cost Credit Scores

December 28th, 2009

Because of the recent credit crisis as well as housing down turn lending rules have evolved significantly. Despite historically competitive house loan interest rates, most people can’t be eligible for them without a really good FICO score. That is why it is very vital that you obtain your free FICO scores and understand where you stand as well as realize where you have to improve to get the lowest mortgage rate.

Where are you able to find free credit ratings?

Many kinds of websites now provide free “credit scores” that are based off of scoring algorithms similar to the national credit bureau formulas at Trans Union, Equifax, and Experian. The correctness of those FICO scores is debatable. Responses with a recent Wall Street Journal report said these scores are not reliable when it comes to a mortgage and re – financing.

These sites are credit.com, creditkarma.com and also quizzle.com. They can|They’ll|They will} provide you with an estimated credit score range instead of an exact score and you can expect loads of advertisements all over the page with several offers you will be encouraged to sign up for.

Why doesn’t the federal government supply free FICO scores in combination with free credit reports?

The easy answer is they were not part of the arrangements with the credit reporting agencies who are these days required by law to deliver them at no cost. They’re only required to produce your free credit reports and which is just what they are doing. They can still earn money providing you the credit scores and which is just what they do.

You can expect to pay around$8-$10 for every FICO score so that’s approximately$24-$30 any time you are planning to find out your scores. And the gurus tell you to look at them every month or two so you can quickly pay out more than hundred dollars over the course of a year.

So where does that leave you? How do you get your free credit scores?

You can head over to web sites you see advertised on TV and sign on to get your free credit reports and scores from all 3 credit reporting vendors.

Doing this would permit you to keep an eye on your FICO on an ongoing basis so you can check your credit score worthiness in less than a minute rather than having to sift through 20 to 30 pages of your credit reports attempting to decode all the abbreviations.

Getting your free credit scores this way does not lower your score because it is a soft inquiry instead of a hard inquiry which can lower your score. And you will be in a position to record any dubious activity in your credit file that might alter your credit score or lead to id theft.

Planning a Hawaii Wedding

December 27th, 2009

Getting married in a far away destination, such as Hawaii, is appealing to many couples. If you’re thinking of a Hawaii wedding, then you’ll have to be sure to plan everything out well. Planning any wedding is hard work, but a destination wedding where you cannot physically oversee everything is even harder. Therefore it’s a good idea to have someone in Hawaii to help you out such as a Hawaii wedding planner.

Any destination wedding takes a lot of planning and Hawaiian weddings are no different. Simply getting everybody there on time is hard enough, but then you have the catering, the dress, the bridesmaids’ dresses and even the priest to get organized. And don’t forget the reception venue and the photographer and … miss out even one of these, and you will be left looking a bit embarrassed. Luckily the internet can help you.

There are also the flowers, the favors and the guest book! Arranging the transportation for your family friends between the church or site for the ceremony and the reception venue isn’t as easy as most think it to be when you are being wed on an island. There is a lot more to do, and eventually all of that can get to be a bit too much.

You have no time to relax or do anything but make sure that the wedding dresses and those for the bridesmaids are delivered on time to the right place. If you have page boys or flower girls then their clothes also have to be selected and their delivery assured. You could save a lot of that by purchasing an ‘off the peg’ dress, but why do that if you want your dress designed as you want it? In any case, it might not fit you when arrive to collect it.

If you get your dresses made at home, then ship them over in carefully packed boxes sealed in plastic. They should also be steamed beforehand. Ensure they will arrive on time by shipping them well before the wedding. Mail them to someone you trust to hold them for you.

You can save yourself a lot of worry if you use the hotel that will be the venue for your reception to help out with some of the arrangements. Many Hawaii hotels offer a wedding planner to help you, and their staff is experienced in handling Hawaiian weddings. Why not approach the hotel for advice? They can provide you with names and contact information of hairdressers, beauticians, local caterers and more.

Another thing you should consider is using a local photographer. They know the best areas and will be able to offer advice as to where you’ll want to do your photo sessions.

Help Desk Software – Why Should You Consider?

December 26th, 2009

Improve IT workflow. Help desk software programs give IT departments the tools they need to track their activities and better manage their workflow.

Uncover recurring problems. Issue tracking software support problems can help you discover recurring issues. Are a few computers taking up hours and days of staff time? It might be worth it to replace those machines. Are staff members taking up hours of your IT department’s time with routine questions about core software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook)? This could point to a need for more training.

Is help desk software freeware an answer?

While there is some freeware help desk software that is quite good, (especially considering the price), even the most dedicated and diligent programmer can only do so much with freeware software. Quite often we have discovered that freeware help desk software is extremely limited. It can only offer the most limited of services, and cannot be customized even the slightest.

Freeware help desk software does cover the basics, so if you’re a small business that’s large enough require a help desk staff of maybe 3 to 5 people, freeware help desk software may do the trick.

Will help desk software help me and my company?

Help desk support software may seem like the perfect solution to all problems relating to customer service, but as with many issues in business, this question is not as simple as it may first appear. In order to determine whether or not your company should invest in IT help desk software, you must first make several more determinations. This process will allow you and your company to determine not only if help desk software is beneficial, but also which services are needed if and when the software is purchased.

First and foremost, the customer base must be fully evaluated to determine whether customer support software would improve or hinder the relationship. Is the clientele young or old? For example, a company that specializes in providing supplies for seniors may have a much more limited application use for help desk software than a company designed to sell model airplanes. Both companies may provide excellent customer service, but one company may lose a portion of the customer base if the help desk support software is too complex for their customers.

Choosing the Appropriate Kitchen Faucets

December 26th, 2009

If you are planning to upgrade your home, then replacing the faucet is one of your top priorities. Changing the faucet to a new one would give new looks to the kitchen. There are many faucets today that have new styles which can help make your kitchen have that modern look.

When choosing a kitchen faucet, always consider some things that would be a huge factor to the look of your kitchen. One of these is the sink. Choose a sink that would also compliment the style of your black kitchen faucets. Examine carefully the holes of the sink for some of the kitchen faucets are designed to fit only those with this kind of feature.

A sink having one hole is designed to fit traditional kitchen faucets. These are the most common type of faucet found on a majority of homes worldwide. Sinks like this require single handed faucets. If you know how many holes are there in your sink, then you would also know which kitchen faucet to choose. It’s either a single handle or a dual handle one.

The advantage of knowing this idea is that it lessens the time of searching for the right faucet all over the place. A dual handle faucet is much more convenient because you can adjust the temperature on both handles correctly. The size of the sink should also match the faucet that you are going to buy.

By carefully observing and checking the things needed to add elegance to your kitchen, you would find out that the look of the faucet can also add to the overall beauty of your home. Look for those branded kitchen faucets that are recognized not only for its stylish look but also for its quality. Weigh your options on black kitchen faucets, white kitchen faucet, or red faucets that match the theme of your home.

Twitter Mania – Follow Me And I Will Follow You Back

December 26th, 2009

Twitter, the social networking and micro-blogging service that allows its users to send and read other users’ updates (otherwise known as tweets), which are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length, has no-doubt become quite a phenomenon. It is widely rumored that Twitter turned down an acquisition offer from Facebook for $500 Million. A recent TechCrunch report stated that Twitter’s valuation has reached in excess of $250 Million. There are reports that state that the reach of Twitter has exceeded that of Digg in a very short span of time.  With an excess of 5 Million users and over 50 Million monthly visits, everyone’s tweeting!

Needless to say, what’s made Twitter a revolution is its ease of use.  From signup to search, from following others to getting followed by others, to tweet or to retweet, to use the web or the phone, Twitter is just plain simple.  Add to this the power of Twitter APIs, there are hundreds of tools, utilities and apps that continue to spring from nowhere.  Today, there is a twitter tool just about to do anything you want on twitter.

Some use twitter for chit-chat.  Ranging from “I just got up, and am off to a shower” to “Please get out and vote for me”, much is being said in 140 characters or less.  Folks are asking questions and people in hundreds respond.  Advertisers market their products, Affilaites promote products, News sources announce breaking news and Bloggers post their blogs as tweets – whether for personal or for business, Twitter is seen everywhere and used by everyone.

It has never been easier to build a network of followers.  Never before has it been so easy to build a network of a 1,000 followers who follow what you have to say and are ready to receive a message from you.  And best of all, it costs nothing to do it!  Just think about what you would have to do to get a following of a 1,000 people – whether it is cold calling, or mail advertisement, or opt-in email marketing or a paid squeeze page lead capture – it takes a lot of time, money and effort.

The benefits being obvious, everyone is looking to build a wide follower base.  There is a widely prevalent phenomenon on Twitter that is increasing in popularity – “Follow Me and I will Follow You Back“.  This simply means that if you follow me on twitter, I will follow you right back.  There are two schools of thought on this.

The first school of thought is that it is not appropriate to follow everyone that follows you.  The second school of thought obviously thinks not.  The idea of not following everyone that follow you has some logic to it.  You could think of some parallels to this – “Buy my product, I will buy your product back” or “Subscribe to my newsletter, I will subscribe to your newsletter back”.  One could also argue that if you follow 1,000’s of people, you really can’t do justice, as multiple tweets from each one (assuming each one is active) would just be information overload and you simply can’t follow any tweet, giving it justice.  Both of these arguments could be argued as having some merit.  But, also not.

Think for a moment why people use Twitter.  True, one of the primary objectives is for you say what you are doing now and for others to tune in (or “follow”), but Twitter can be used for reasons well beyond that.  Twitter is a wonderful networking tool, where you can build relationships with others and communicate not just now, but for months and years to come.  You can sure tweet for the moment, but you can just as well message the other person in private.  And if it is true that Twitter is a social networking tool, and if others have something of value to offer to you in return, there is nothing unusual about you tuning into their message as well.  After all, you only stand to benefit!

The school of thought that says “Follow Me and I will Follow You Back” does has merit.  Just because two parties follow each other, there is no commitment or obligation.  Either party can ignore tweets, or can search through tweets by name, by RSS feeds or utilizing one of the infinite tools available, if the ongoing tweets are missed.  Either party can message each other, and either party can choose to review or ignore such messages.  And if one does not wants to be bothered, that could be done as well.  Worst case, one could unfollow and/or block others as well. Just as anything else in life, if you use the tool effectively, you will only stand to benefit.

Twitter is real.  Twitter works.  Twitter is the tool of the century – probably bigger and better than any other Social Networking or Web 2.0 tool.  Embrace it!

And if “Follow” bothers you, because you simply can’t follow 1,000’s of people (which I agree with and in that context, Twitter allowing one to follow 2,000 people may not make sense either, unless most are not active, in which case they should not be on Twitter in the first place!), then follow others on Twitter (and be followed) so you can use it to “Send and Receive Messages“.   Again, there is no better tool, whether online or offline, that allows you to be able to send and receive messages to such a wide audience that has mutually agreed to receive and send messages to each other.

If you agree with this thought process, maybe we should rephrase the theme to “Receive Me and I will Receive You Back“.    And, maybe we are not just talking Twitter, but rather an enhanced Twitter, one that is naturally Two-way, maybe we are talking Twowitter
